MEDICAL DEVICES : BUSINESS TRENDS

1. TRENDS SO FAR

  • The successful players had been the integrated companies which had power –both money-power and manpower to "discover" new devices and equipments

  • These players, through their networking strength, were able to lead the trends

2. TRENDS OF FUTURE

  • The market will be fragmented in

- contract manufacturers

- research companies

- clinical trial and registration companies

- "old giants" struggling to lead

3. WHAT IS A DEVICE?

  • A new medicine research requires millions of Dollars and at least 5 years’ time to launch

  • Cost of discovering 12 compounds estimated at about 100 mn USD (and only 2 succeeded)

4. THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR A MEDICAL DEVICE TO "DISCOVER"

……a device is comparatively much easier and much less complicated/risky

  • Can we, in India, start thinking on these lines?

  • The answer of why we have not thought of this in India so far is the same as the answer of why we have not taken research direction for medicines also.

  • How can we do trend analysis?

-We took two months’ news items related to healthcare and medical devices and grouped them into various groups

-There were about 410 main news items which we grouped

  • Registrations and patents of new devices

*Mr Amit Dave is a Pharmacy Postgraduate and a Master of Business Administration from Gugarat University. He is in the Pharma and Devices marketing activities for the last 17 years. Widely travelled, his involvement in the International Marketing and his exposure to almost all the major healthcare markets internationally gives him a different angle of looking at the business. Out of his more than 13 years’ experiance with Core Group, the major experiance was as Strategic Marketing Head. He was involved in both Medical Devices and Renal Devices marketing as Vice President-Strategic Marketing.
