Protonated Bio-Adhesive Polymer
Technology (PBT) – Axio Biosolutions, Bangalore
Leo Mavely is Founder & CEO of Axio Biosulutions.
A graduate in Applied Bioengineering from MDH,
Rohtak and mentored at Nirma Lbs. In the college
he worked on developing Microfluidic devices like
Micropumps, Microcentrifuges from biopolymers Poly
Di-Methyl Siloxane. These devices were developed
on a lab scale without using costly techniques
such as Photolithography. The working model was
developed with the help of Dr. Amit Astana
(Mentor) as part of 5 member team. The project won
award at IIT-Roorkee Techfest 2006. Leo was
featured in the list of 40 under 40 emerging
business leaders by Fortune Magazine |
consecutively 2016, 2017,
2018 and 2019 and in the list of 35 under 35
entrepreneurs by Entrepreneur magazine in 2020. Leo
was honored as a Champion of Change by Prime Minister,
Shri Narendra Modi in 2017. He was the recipient of
Silicon valley challenges 2014, Anjani Mashelkar
Inclusive Innovation Award 2013, CNBC Samsung Social
Innovation Award 2012 and was invited speaker at
Indian Science Congress 2010.

Technology
The concept of clamping a
bleeding vessel with an instrument before typing it
off is generally attributed to Galen (second century
AD). This method of hemostasis was largely forgotten
until it was rediscovered by the French barber-surgeon
Ambroise Paré in the 16th century. QuikClot is a
proprietary hemostatic technology consisting of a
nonwoven material impregnated with kaolin, an
inorganic mineral that activates factor XII1 which in
turn accelerates the body’s natural clotting ability.
This bleeding control solution creates a robust clot6,
7 to control bleeding fast.
Innovation
Axio Biosolutions employs
the proprietary Protonated Bioadhesive Polymer
technology (PBT) to make its biopolymerbased
hemostats, drug delivery systems and scaffolds with
tailorable bio-adhesive properties. The essence of PBT
technology lies in maximizing the bio-adhesive
properties of native chitosan without chemical
modifications in its backbone. Axiostat is the first
commercial product based on the PBT. Its uniform
microscopic porous structure provides a unique
molecular chemistry of chitosan within the matrix,
which helps in retaining its positive charge for
prolonged duration and even under physiological
conditions. This method of bleeding control is robust
enough that it works irrespective of the natural
clotting factors, hence PBT is successful even in
patients taking the blood thinning medications. Lastly
the enhanced cationic charge provided by the PBT
biopolymer also provides strong antimicrobial
properties to the material and restricts entry of
external bacteria into the wound site.

Axio developed Axiostat –
India’s First and only USFDA approved trauma hemostat
that stops life threatening bleeding instantly.
Axiostat is being used by soldiers in over 350
battallions across India to manage bleeding from
injuries in battlefield. It is approved in over 40
countries and used by major armed forces globally.
Axiostat is a bioactive haemostatic dressing that
works on a unique charge-based mechanism to stop the
bleeding quickly.
The startup announced
another USFDA 510K thousands clearance for Axiostat
Patch for control of moderate to severe bleeding in
vascular procedures, surgical debridement sites,
puncture sites and more. This clearance opens the door
to enter markets such as Vascular closure,
Hemodialysis, EMS and Military segments in the US
soon. Axiostat had also received CE mark in Europe
earlier and is also approved in over 40 countries
worldwide. Over half a million units have been
deployed since inception globally especially in
battlefields to control bleeding from trauma injuries
and in hospitals to control for vascular closure
bleeding.
