IVD / Diagnostics Sector In India: Opportunities
Today & Tomorrow
The Indian Manufacturers of In-Vitro Diagnostics or IVD
products has demonstrated phenomenon contribution by way
of handling challenges faced during COVID – 19 pandemic.
It included uninterrupted manufacturing, logistics,
testing capacities & reporting all activities.
Demand for IVD products of all kinds - reagents,
instruments , disposables / consumables and systems used
to diagnose and monitor Covid – 19 , heart disease ,
diabetes and all critical and non-critical conditions is
surging.
The Government interventions helped the IVD sector scale
up production during the pandemic.
The Government of India through its flagship “Make In
India” initiative relied heavily on the Indian
Manufacturers to meet the rising demand. Government
released the “Production Linked Incentives ( PLI )
Scheme with a total financial outlay of Rs 3420/- crores.
The Medical Device Parks and PLI schemes are expected to
lead to a generation of additional employment of 33,7501
jobs over a period of 5 years according to “Invest
India”.
Polymer Based Disposables & Consumables Play a
Significant Role For The IVD Sector.
Today’s IVD sector rely heavily on Disposables /
Consumables specifically polymer based. There are
various categories of polymer based products used. It
includes:
• Pipette Tips
• Sample and reaction Tubes, Cuvettes, micro centrifuge
Tubes etc.
• Petri dishes, Cell Culture Dishes, Bottles, Plates
etc.
• Deep-well Plates, PCR Plates, Microtiter Plates,
Racks, Cassettes etc.
This is only a partial list of products.
These products require manufacturing to strict precision
and efficiency standards. It is also important that for
most of the applications, the products should be
absolutely sterile offered in sterile packaging.
Regulatory norms describe the product and manufacturing
requirements.
These disposable products are elaborate and highly
varied, as units can be thinwalled, transparent, and
delicate or have complex shape. They require very strict
tolerances because of functions such as dosing accuracy,
snap-in catches, or seals are indispensable in
diagnostics.
This means, during processes like Injection Moulding,
feasibility must be combined with high output volume and
low unit costs. This requires challenges to be faced in
mould construction also. |
